What is Global Shading Day?

Global Shading Day, which is celebrated every March 21, is a global initiative that seeks to raise awareness of the importance of passive sun protection as a key solution to combat climate change and promote sustainability in buildings. In 2025, this event celebrates its third edition, consolidating itself as an international movement.

Organised by the European Solar Shading Organisation (ES-SO), Global Shading Day 2025 launches a call to action on 21 March, under the slogan: Save energy, stay comfortable, protect our planet.” Since its launch, Global Shading Day has grown exponentially, attracting participants from all over Europe and other continents. Ann Van Eycken, Secretary General of ES-SO, states that:

“By 2025, we aim to take this initiative to new heights, engaging more actors and using digital platforms to amplify our message.”

Main benefits:

  • Passive cooling: Reduces the need for air conditioning, reducing energy consumption and costs.

  • Comfort and productivity: Ensures a pleasant indoor environment, minimizing glare and improving well-being.

  • Sustainability: Sun shading systems contribute significantly to the reduction of CO2 emissions, supporting global climate goals.

According to the study conducted by Guidehouse on November 5, 2021, smart sun protection could reduce energy consumption for cooling in European buildings by up to 60% by 2050. This would prevent the emission of 100 million tonnes of CO2 and would mean savings of 285,000 million euros.

How to participate?

Global Shading Day is more than just an event; it is an invitation to join in a meaningful change. Governments, architects, engineers and citizens can all contribute by organising activities, sharing information and promoting the benefits of sun protection through social media and local media. In addition, this year the event has a new key tool: a new www.globalshadingday.com website, designed to be a comprehensive resource that facilitates information, promotes participation and amplifies the reach of the movement.
